Scientists and conservationists have just witnessed a mass hatching of baby Giant South American River Turtles
in Brazil and they've estimated that there were approximately 210,000
of them! Turtle researchers managed to mark and release 15,000 of these
baby turtles so they can hopefully provide valuable research and
important data in the future with a method called "Mark &
Recapture". This will allow researchers to estimate the size of the
population, and also helps to calculate dispersal patterns and survival
rates.
